Before we even take the first bite, our digestive system has already prepared itself to digest the food we are about to eat.

Digestion starts with our senses – when we think about, see and smell food. All of these trigger our salivary glands.

After the first bite, saliva starts to chemically break down the food in our mouth, while our teeth take care of the mechanical aspect of breaking down our food.

The tongue helps move the food to the back of our pharynx so that it can be swallowed and move down to the esophagus.

The esophagus is a muscular tube connecting the throat with the stomach, a muscular organ that stores food, breaks it down using muscles and bile, and then moves it along to the small intestine.

The small intestine continues breaking down the food and enables us to absorb vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, and fats with the help of the liver (responsible for detoxifying, storing vital substances, producing bile), the pancreas (produces enzymes that help break down fats, carbohydrates, and protein) and the gallbladder (secretes bile to break down fat and store it effectively in the body).

From here, the food makes its way to the large intestine. The large intestine is the last digestive organ in the digestion system. It functions to trap remaining food particles after they have been digested in the stomach and small intestine. The large intestine absorbs the fluids and salts from the remaining food and facilitates healthy gut bacteria. This process can take up to 24 hours, after which the solid waste is discarded through the anus.

Constipation

Constipation is a condition caused by slow peristalsis, which results in the slow passing of bowel movements and could even lead to stools becoming impacted in the large intestine.

Constipation can be chronic, when the frequency of bowel movements is less than twice a week, requires effort, and is accompanied by pain and hard stools

We recommend: Flaxseed oil taken internally.

Colitis
