Allergies and Essential Oils

In our modern and industrialized world, there is an ever-increasing number of allergic phenomena caused by a wide range of factors.

Risk factors for allergies are two-fold: our genetics – including hereditary traits, race, gender, and age, and also various environmental factors – such as climate, foliage, dust, pets, and more.

Allergy symptoms develop when the body’s immune system overreacts to environmental factors and external substances. Symptoms vary from one person to another, despite identical factors. The most common symptoms include sensitivity around the eyes, rash and skin irritation, sneezing, fatigue, itching, rhinitis, shortness of breath, intolerance of certain foods, headaches, and more. For a small percentage of people, allergies can even be life-threatening.

The most common causes of allergic reactions are dust, mold, bug bites, pet dander, food (peanuts, gluten, lactose, and more), medication (penicillin, for example), and many others.

One of the most amazing benefits of essential oils is their ability to fight off inflammation and strengthen the immune system. Using essential oils to treat allergies helps cleanse the body, fight off infections, bacteria, parasites, microorganisms, and toxins. Essential oils reduce the body’s sensitivity to external stimuli and prevent the immune system from overreacting to allergenic invaders. Many essential oils are natural antihistamines.

Essential oils for allergies:

Silver fir essential oil

Antiviral, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory, known for its septic qualities. This essential oil is made from fir trees. The oil relieves cough and difficulty breathing, asthma, sinusitis, and excess phlegm.

This oil can be mixed with a carrier oil and rubbed on the chest and back, or used in a burner to smell or inhale the vapors it produces.

In addition, silver fir essential oil soothes skin lesions, such as rashes and bug bites.

Mint essential oil

Mint essential oil helps alleviate stuffy nose caused by allergic reactions. The oil disinfects the airways and enables easy breathing when dealing with respiratory asthma. Inhaling mint essential oil even reduces excess phlegm. It can be used with a burner or inhaled straight from the bottle.

Lavender essential oil

Lavender essential oil helps reduce allergic and inflammatory reactions in the body. Lavender essential oil has natural antihistamine properties, and can therefore be used by applying to the skin to treat allergic reactions. In addition, lavender essential oil can stave off allergic reactions in the airways when inhaled directly from the bottle or when used with a burner. The soothing effects of lavender essential oil enable quiet sleep, relief from cough, sneezing, and easier breathing.

Tea tree essential oil

Tea tree oil has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and when diffused through the air it can fight mold, fungus, a variety of bacterial infections, and more. In doing so, the oil reduces household allergies. In addition, tea tree oil has natural antihistamine properties that make breathing easier when inhaled, and soothe the skin when applied together with a carrier oil.

Eucalyptus globulus and eucalyptus radiata essential oil

Eucalyptus globulus and eucalyptus radiata essential oils are known for their properties that help treat airway issues. This is why they are perfect for seasonal allergies and asthma attacks. Eucalyptus oils are also known for their ability to fight off mold, which causes allergic reactions and asthma attacks. Eucalyptus radiata is delicate enough to be used by children and babies, by applying around the nostrils, on clothing, on linens, diffused around the room, or in a burner.

Lemon essential oil

Lemon essential oil is known for its qualities to treat respiratory problems caused by allergies. Lemon essential oil is an antioxidant and a natural antiseptic. It is also great for soothing.

The oil can be used with a burner.
